There’s a kid I know who throws discus over 175 feet!

Most high school boys throw 100 to 135 feet. At track meets if he doesn’t throw well, even though he leaves everyone in the dust, he’s mad. Really?! He wins every meet.

But he’s not competing with everyone else. He’s competing with himself. He’s constantly trying to improve. And that, I admire.

We’ve all been there: on the receiving end of a text, e-mail or phone call that informs us, “So-and-so has cancer.” Maybe it was you.

Soon I’ll have to take off my shoes to continue counting the people I personally know who have or had cancer.
